Frequently asked questions

How do I add a new instrument?

On the home screen, tap the + button in the Instruments section. Give it a name and type, then tap Add. Your new instrument will appear in the list immediately.

How do I organize my practice material?

Musizen uses a three-level hierarchy: Instruments → Categories → Items. Inside an instrument, tap "Add category" to create a group (for example: Scales, Technique, Repertoire). Inside a category, add individual practice items like specific scales, exercises, or pieces.

How do I use the metronome?

Open any practice item and scroll to the Metronome section. Tap the play button to start. Use the BPM controls to adjust tempo, choose a time signature (2/4 through 7/4), and select a subdivision. The metronome saves your last-used BPM and subdivision for each item so you always pick up where you left off.

How do I record myself?

Inside any practice item, tap Start recording. The app will request microphone permission on first use — grant it to enable recording. Tap Stop when you're done, then tap the preview button to listen back immediately. Recordings are saved with the item when you save your session.

What are practice lists?

Practice lists let you build an ordered sequence of practice items to run through in one sitting — a warm-up routine, a recital prep checklist, or a full session plan. On the home screen, tap New list in the Practice Lists section, add items from any category, then tap Start practice to run through them one by one with a timer, metronome, and recording for each.

Where is my data stored? Can I back it up?

All data is stored locally on your device in a private SQLite database. Recordings are saved to the app's private local filesystem. Neither is sent to any server. At this time, iCloud backup and export are not yet supported. We recommend practicing regularly so your sessions are logged before you upgrade or replace your device.

The metronome isn't making sound. What should I do?

  • Make sure your phone is not in silent mode (flip the ringer switch on the side).
  • Turn up the volume using the hardware volume buttons — the metronome uses media volume, not ringer volume.
  • If you were recently recording, try stopping any active recording first, then start the metronome again.

How do I delete a recording?

Open the practice item, scroll to the Recordings section in your session history, and swipe left on the recording you want to remove. Tap Delete to confirm.

Is Musizen free?

Yes. Musizen is free to download with no subscription and no in-app purchases. Everything is included.
